    Default Young Rhino

Taken in the Sabi Sands, South Africa. We came across a mother and 2 young rhinos but that appeared to be different ages. This was the older of the two. I'm sure some will say they would prefer a vertical crop and I have one I can post but I think the image loses some of its feel by not being able to tell the relative size of the rhino in the vast bush. I'll post the vertical crop below.

    Canon 50D
    100-400 @ 310mm
    1/800
    f10
    ISO 400
    Handheld from a safari vehicle.

    C&C welcome and appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Rachel

    Rachel,

Always nice to see Rhino calves this is a White Rhino. When I saw the thumbnail I thought that has to have been taken in South Africa as there is nowhere else that Rhino are so easy to view, although Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha comes pretty close for Black Rhino.

It is not often that you get a Rhino with its head up, although you nearly always get bits of grass.

The vertical crop looks more impressive due to size of the animal, but I am not sure which I prefer, I would try taking a little bit from LHS of landscape to see how that looks.

BTW the Rhino is youg as it has small horns;)

Actually, I prefer the horizontal image. I've seen many face-on images of rhinos, but the horizontal here is a bit out of the ordinary. TFS

Thanks Ken and Harshad for the comments. Ken -I almost consider this last trip "the Rhino Trip." We saw so many white rhinos we lost count. At least 15 and probably closer to 20, including the 2 young ones. I've got a ton of rhino shots. I know the horn is a give away on the age but I still think I prefer the wider crop. I can take some off the lhs as you suggested. I've been fortunate and seen rhino on each of my 3 trips to Africa including black rhino in the Mara. Thanks for the comments.

Rachel, I prefer the horizontal image as the vertical one is a bit too common a view. By that I mean that we all would automatically take it that way and present it as such, so I like the fact that you've given some environment and room to the youngster.

Ken, I think you'll find both black and white rhinos incredibly easy to view at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and in fact you'd be pretty much guaranteed good sightings of both adults and calves. Lake Nakuru NP also has very good, close up views of white rhinos in particular and in my experience not too much long grass, probably the time of year. Having said that, I'd love to see the desert black rhinos in Namibia … one day perhaps! :)

Hi Rachel, I too prefer the 'landscape' version OP, to the more pedestrian version, although I think it might need a little look at re cropping, I like it being off. Am I right in thinking you are looking down to the Rhino rather than parallel, head on which adds to the perspective.

For me it looks a little washed out overall and needs some more 'depth' in it. Had a play (not ideal but it kind of works) in curves & levels, plus exposure. Found that -0.10 & -0.95 helped, also two rounds of additional USM just on the rhino. Once again, I feel you have all the components there, they just need bring out. :)

Thanks Hilary and Steve for the comments and suggestions. Yes, you are correct that I am looking down. I was in the vehicle and the rhino was shorter than the vehicle. We gave the family a wider berth as well due to the young ones.

    Rachel,
I prefer the horizontal. This needs a little bit of tweaking and it would be fine. Thanks for sharing.
