Canon 7D, Canon 300mmf2.8 is, s/speed 1/1600s, f2.8, iso 250, eval.meter, no cropping, handheld from a vehicle. Processed in ACR and Photoshop. Location Duba Plains, Okavango Delta, slightly overcast morning, 6 March 2010. I shot at f2.8 to try and blur out the background. Used Clone tool in PS to remove a piece of dry white grass hanging on the lions' mane. My feeling on this is not enough space below feet. Can anyone advise how to "add canvas" in CS4. All C and C welcome

This is something I have not seen in ages in Botswana, a decent lion:)

Not since the days of the 3 malr coalition on charge at Selinda until 2004.

I agree with your suggestion of adding a little canvas, I would also add another round of sharpening, in particular around the eyes.

I am sure somebody will be able to explain the process better than I ever could.

This would be a very worthwhile investment

Thanks Ken, I will look into ordering one of those cd's from Arts shop. I am learning PS from a couple of excellent books however they are written mostly for Macs and I use a PC, so I frequently come to dead ends where the alternative PC instructions aren't explained. I will resharpen the image though, on your advice
You have to be kidding me about big male lions in Botswana Ken:)...there is a fine one at Jao, a fantastic pair at Mombo (the Western Boys), a reasonable pair at Selinda.....this one at Duba (called the Skimmer male) and the Central Kalahari is a good place for some fine specimens too. There is also a decent pair along the Linyanti but they have only 3 eyes between them..gotta get them on the good side :)

    Grant,

You may be correct but who from Africa can afford to go to these places, or would want to (much to much emphasis on luxury rather than game viewing).

I must confess to forgetting the CKGR we had some petty good sightings there in 2009.

Thanks Harshad, I am looking forward to your next tiger post. And Ken, you are definitely correct about the costs of some of the camps that I have mentioned for Africans, they are very high. However, on trips that I lead we definitely concentrate on game-viewing over the luxury, regardless of where we are staying, otherwise I would never get any pictures :)

Hi Grant, I agree that there needs more space below and to the lhs in my opinion. I like the POV, but for me shooting at f/2.8 hasn't really worked as you could have achieved something similar using say f/5.6 but had a far sharper image, adding more USM to the above image doesn't really help having tried it. In addition I find the sky top left rather distraction and the colours of the grass & bushes a little harsh.

I think overall it's an image that could have been really good, but for me it isn't quite there. Sorry to be rather negative, but IMHO it had so much potential.

The way the lion is positioned in the frame, and the eyes, make this a very powerful image!
