Love it! The head angle and eye contact are awesome and I like the horizontal pose. I would be thrilled with this shot if it were mine, but then I would also be looking at the head and upper wing and wishing for a separation.

    Thanks Connie.

So do I, but taken as a whole, I am well satisfied with it. :)

    Thanks for your comments.

Really beautiful and very artistic. Your composition leads me right under his wing to his face.

Looks like a duo tone image. I like it a lot. The overall grey feeling with the reddish neck and head. I understand the wish for more separation between wing/head, but I like it like that peaking out from under the wing. Well done.

    Hi Robert,

I think this is lovely. I find the pose to be very engaging and interesting. I appreciate the comments on the head separation from the wings however, in my opinion the bird peaking out from under the wings helps tell the story of the bird's crafty hunting style. The overall composition and placement of the bird in frame is perfect for my taste.

A I would expect, your exposure looks great and the bird is good and sharp with good detail.

Thanks again for a wonderful workshop at Gatorland!

    Robert:

I rather like reddish egrets. The pose really does tell the story of their hunting tech, so don't mind the separation issue.

On my monitor, the image seems a bit too contrasty. I might try a version with a mild reverse S curve.

    Cheers

    Robert:

I had a minute, and applied the reverse S curve and tweaked the water a bit to reduce the reflections off it.
    Just an option to consider.

    Cheers

    Randy,

Thanks. I did consider it and went with the higher contrast version for posting. My alternate version looks a lot like yours. During my workshop, I demonstrated a few techniques to my participant on lowering the contrast on this image, the reverse s-curve being one of them. Over on the landscape forum, the reverse s curve is a common recommendation from me to lower contrast.

    Hey Robert,
Big fan of the OP....love the almost high key look and the peek under the wing is killer!!! Only recommendation.....small black border for presentation here on BPN.....prevent it from bleeding into our BG color. Super all around!

    Thanks Roman,

I like the toned down look Randy did and did one myself but when I made the image the high-key BG was what I saw in the field due to overcast backlighting and what I envisioned in the post-processing. The OP would be my preferred presentation.
