Zoom Blur - WITH REPOST
Semipalmated Sandpipers were gathered at a pond in Cape May NJ. Artie and I stayed with his old friend Kevin Karlson and his wife Dale. Kevin is a very well known photographer and knows Cape May like the back of his hand. This night I borrowed Kevin's 600mm lens and took this image of the flock. I added a zoom blur in photoshop.
1/1000 sec. at f/7.1 ISO 800 . I experimented w/ all different f-stops and SS and kept chimping to see the results.:)

I am beginning to like what a zoom blur effect can do in an image. I think the off-center in-focus bird works, just wish it was a little larger or it had a 'something' extra (I don't know what-wish I had the vision that you have). For me, anyway - it gets a bit lost. However, because of the lines created by the blur the viewers eye does keep coming back to the bird.

Deb, I think you make a really good point about the size of the main focal point-I thought about that as well and decided that I liked the overall blurred pattern lines-maybe I will re-work it w/ a cluster of birds in focus? Anyway thanks much for the feedback.:)
Love the pattern and zoom blur, Denise. Agree with Deborah on having a larger focal point.
I love your choice of using the bird in flight as the focal point. I had not thought of using more in focus birds as the center of interest until I read the posts above but that is a great idea that I wish that I had thought of :o

Not sure if this is any better but here it is.
They are both neat. If I had to choose I would pick the second with more of the birds in focus. Think it looks pretty close to a blur done in-camera.
Hey Denise.....very cool and creative.....lovin the OP more.....one bird is all it needed and excellent job with the blur too!
