    Default 7D autofocus speed (v. 50D)

I am looking for some insight into whether the 7D has a faster auto-focus speed than the 50D. I have had a 50D and due to a theft, I can either replace it or trade up to the 7D.

I am also curious where the differences in operation (not so much technical features - I have read several reviews on the technical aspects) between the two cameras - that is, are the setting and controls pretty similar? I had started to get fairly quick with adjustments - so I am curious if it is fairly transferable. it appears to be.

    Cal,

As an owner of both, the 7D is a big upgrade in the AF department. Go here for details on that:

    http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/control...articleID=3049.

As far as controls, there are differences but IMO the custom function changes are a positive over the 50D. For the most part, it is very similar to the 50D with the new AF controls and setups, and a new Custom Function menu option for assigning controls to various buttons being the biggest differences. And you can alos now set the AF sensitivity as you can in the pro cameras.

Get a PDF of the manual on Canon's site or here to see the differences.

IMO, AF performance is a big step forward.

Artie is also selling a guide that profiles set-up and major advancements.

That's great! Thanks Robert. Glad to hear it in person too. So do you use your 50D anymore?

    Cal,

I can say the 7D AF systems is fast and love the toggle between zones and single-sensor. The system has a nice easy to use one-button menu I find very functional and I like the leveling feature too. I owned a 40D prior to this purchase and cannot offer the baseline you requested with the 50D. I would however recommend the 7D to anyone wanting to purchase a nice pro-summer Cannon DSLR at a great price point.

Robert, thanks for the guidance. The 7D arrived yesterday. Best extra $600 I ever spent. It immediately felt significantly advanced. The out of the box shots were far superior!
