    I am pretty sure this would be a finch, just not sure and if so, is it a female?

    Hi Dave- You are right, this is a finch. The face looks like a Carpodacus finch- Purple, Cassin's or House. Note the ample, conical bill. Males in this genus show organge or red and females brown/grey. But there in Sibley, right down at the bottom of the House Finch page is a "yellow variant" House Finch male, that looks very much like your bird (yours has a little less yellow than the illustration). The streaking on the breast of your bird is consistent with a House Finch as well. Sibley mentions that the yellow variants are most frequently encountered in the southwest.

    Thanks John.

    I think I will pick up a copy of Sibley's book. A person can never have enough bird books.
