I was fortunate enough to encounter this elusive bird at the Mankwe hide two weekends in a row. He is very skittish and would fly away at the slightest sign of human activity. This was taken as two tourists moved down the walkway to the hide and he did his disappearing trick.

Cool-looking bird, I'm not sure if I have seen this species before, does the name mean 'hammer head' in English? The name sounds somewhat German/Dutch.

I like the takeoff pose, head angle and BG. I might put the bird a tad further to the right in the frame and lighten the shadow on the far wing.

    Thanks for sharing!

I love the bird and the take-off pose is fantastic. Agree with Axel about the
shadow but does not bother here too much. The eye contact and BG are excellent too.

Very timely capture, with nice bird, BG and head angle. Catch light a big bonus.

Hi Gerrie, split second timing to capture this pose. You have pressed the shutter before he thought of taking off.;) I like the light and sharpness, with lovely complimentary colours in the BG. Well captured.

Great pose, wing position, and timing. Like the BKGR and the perch too. (Did you post another bird leaving this perch recently???) The head could use a bit more sharpening.

Thank you for viewing & commenting everyone. It is much appreciated.:)

The name, if directly translated, is indeed "Hamerhead", although Roberts have retained the name as is.
