    Default Gray Fox, Female

We are blessed to have a family of Gray Fox's visiting my parents place on a regular basis. We located the den, 2 pups...and the moma and papa are doing a great job keeping them well fed. We are staying away from the den so as to not disturb them.

The adults take turns hunting. I have been blessed with some good evenings in very close proximity of them in my blind. Lots of images to share. For now...here is one of the adult female.

    D300s, 600VR, f/4, ISO 400, 1/500th, taken on June 1st.

This was at point blank range. I could only get a portion of her in the viewfinder so I went for a head portrait. Hope you enjoyed, C&C welcomed and encouraged.

    Lovely head shot Jason.

I'd consider to dodge its left cheek a bit.

    cheers

Beautiful portrait, sweet expression. The green BG is really complimentary.

Great sharpness and background. Would like to see the EXIF data?

A good day for beautiful animals, to my mind this is just a little too sharp but that is just my strange taste.

    Everything else is almost perfect.

Jason - What a catch in Missouri - a gray fox! Beautiful shot as always. Nop told me yesterday he had been shooting gray foxes but he didn't mention if it was your batch or the ones he had in his yard last year. I've never even had a glimpse of this species, even though I've been covered up with red ones for the pats two springs.

Beautiful animal and sweet bg !! Got to love that face !!

I think the appearance of over sharpening has to do with the white hairs, that was my first impression but not sure !!! Big Congrats !!

Thanks for the replies. I only did a slight capture sharpening in NX2 of USM on subject only of 30, 5, 4, nothing else as it was fine as it was. The hairs on a Gray Fox have a whitish/grayish tip on them. In the sun, this part of their fur really shines. It looks great on my monitor, but would be curious if others think its over sharpenend.

I added the exif to the original post. I forgot to add that, sorry. Some may wonder why f/4. The Fox was in super close, and no matter what I did with my aperture, the DOF would still be very thin. So I decided to open it up and get the best bg I could.

Yep, Nop is coming over tomorrow to shoot in the evening. Then Monday morning we are shooting some Flycatchers if it all works out. May do a bit of fishing too if the schedule will allow it.

I was blown away with the Gray Fox discovery to be honest! To have the den located on family property was icing on the cake. What is even more interesting, on some other family property, while turkey hunting this spring, I saw a Gray Fox working the field edges in the mornings.

    Jason,

Thanks for the explanation, we have a similar situation here in Africa with Klipspringer.
