Found this Osprey nest on the St. Lawrence River. This was taken from the boat hand held so its not a sharp as I wanted but I still like it for my first Osprey shot.

It's always great to get to photograph a new species. The sharpness looks good but the harsh light made exposing the underwings really difficult. Did you dial in positive EC?

    Jeff:

Congrats on your first osprey image, and with a fish to boot.
Axel's point about + EC is the best teaching point here. You needed a lot more to bring up the underwing detail. The problem of course is that you will burn out the whites on the head. I certainly think you might be able to tease some more detail out under the wings with some shadow work, if the noise stays under control.

The head is turned away, generally best if it is parallel or turned towards us a bit.

    Cheers

Thanks guys. I did not dial in any +EC but should have. I will try to add some in Lightroom and see what happens. Now that I know where they are I will be visiting them again soon.

    Jeff"

I played with your image a bit in ACR and photoshop, and found that on balance, liked just doing some shadow work under the wings. Since the harsh light already overexposed the head whites, adding exposure after the fact exacerbated that issue.

I used a curves adjustment selectively applied to the underwings with a soft/low opacity brush, worked well.

    Cheers

Thanks Randy. I will have to do some Photoshop training and work.
