    Default Mombo Lioness and Cub

    Attached Images Attached Images

Canon EOS7D, Canon EF300mm f2.8 IS, handheld from a vehicle. Evaluative metering. Shutter speed 1/60 at f4.0, iso 640. Cropped to 14mpixels. Processed in ACR 5.7, sharpened in Photoshop. This lioness and her cub were part of a bigger group of twelve, and they had just woken up from their daytime nap. The adult female was lying listening to sounds in the distance, which gave her an alert expression. Her cub was more interested in our vehicle, and was looking straight at us. Luckily they kept still for quite some time which helped me shoot at a slow speed. Image taken on 25 May 2010 at 17h54, location Mombo, Okavango Delta, Botswana

V nice, gotta love a mama with cub. Great eye contact from both and love the way the cub's head is between her paws.
Not sure about crop on right with cub, maybe this is the best crop. A bit soft on mom? Maybe DOF issue at f4?

Super cute with great expression. I like the crop. Mom's eyes look just a tad soft on my monitor.

It must get dark early in Mombo:)
A pity that you could not get them in golden light, but the weather in Botswana remains apparently pretty bad.

Mum is definitely in need of a little selective sharpening.

Hi Ken, Ed and Tom, thanks for your comments. The mom is soft, due to DOF. I was aware of it, and I could see that f4 wasn't enough for me to get enough DOF, but I dont really like going higher on the iso than 640 with my current camera bodies..... Perhaps I should have tried a few frames at a smaller aperture and taken a chance on slow shutter speed. From May to July it gets dark quite early, and there were a few clouds about that gave us an early sunset.
I did get one shot of another lioness w/out cub in the same pose...
    thanks for your comments

The colour & pose is 'sweet' but I think the moderately high ISO and slow shutter speed hasn't quite given as crisp an image as hoped, especially if you have cropped to 14mp, be good to see at 800px. Always good to see parent & cub together.

Nice pose and eye contact. Do wish the adult was just a little sharper.
