Today was my last day in San Diego, I fly home tomorrow. I went to a favorite spot to bird and photograph, the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve. It is run jointly by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as a National Wildlife Refuge, the California Department of Parks and Recreation as a State Park and by NOAA as part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. It is on the border between Mexico and the US and if you walk the beach to the mouth of the river you are within 50 feet of Mexico.

This Black-chinned Hummingbird sat on the limb about 5 foot away from me and allowed his picture to be taken for posterity

    Myer:

I like the attentive gaze, size of perch, view of foot. If possible a step or two to your right to throw the background foliage a bit more to the right would have been nice.
There is some noise showing in the background.
DOF of course is a challenge here. Eye is good, and I like the catchlight. If he allowed, it would have been fun to move the focus point to the base of his bill, or just a bit further out, to try and get more of it in focus while keeping the eye good. If shooting off a tripod, and you had time, you could have sacrificed a bit of shutter speed for more DOF.

    Which camera were you using?

Nice to have images that bring back the memories of places seen and enjoyed.

    Cheers

    Randy

Thanks for the comments. I tried to reduce the noise in the BG, but will try again

I like the soft light and head angle. I agree on NR on the BG and might go for a wider crop if you have more room. Maybe a tad more sharpening of the bird?

repost is a big improvement compared to OP. Would have been nice if you could have stepped to the right to avoid the distracting elements in BG.
