    Default Lake Wales Ridge Toad

Picked this little one up in the driveway this afternoon and kept it in a cool box till the clouds took over at 6:30pm. Posed it on a log on the hood of my car. Canon 180 macro with the EOS-1D MIV. Giotto's tiny ballhead on the 3530 LS. ISO 800. Evaluative metering at zero: 1/20 sec. at f/11. Macro Twin Light at -1 stop.

This one is much redder than the Fowler's Toads that I found regularly in Brooklyn, NY. Can anyone identify the species?

As for the image, don't be shy; all comments welcome.

I may have overdone the sharpening on the snout :(

Snout does -not- look sharp to me? Eyes - yes sharp. Snout no.
Otherwise like it, and color of BG.

    Artie,

My guess would be Southern Toad. The overall coloring of this toad varies from brown, black, or red. How large overall?

    Cool image!

Thanks Chas. It was about 2 inches. And the habitat fits perfectly. I am sure that you nailed it.

As for the snout, with anything slower than 1/20, the throat was unacceptably sharp; I did not have enough d-o-f to cover the snout. So I selectively sharpened it too much--thus the grainy look there....

When something is not sharp best to let it go, trying to sharpen makes it worse? Love the image as presented !!!

    Hi Arthur
I liked the symetry created by the pose, and the ridges and patterns on the skin, and all complimented by the green BG. Nice shot.

    Here's a re-do without the extra snout sharpening :)

Repost looks good Art. Makes the color and texture of the eyes standout more.

Here's my 2 cents, in Photoshop worked (unsharp mask) on whole "face" except eyes.

    .
Still don't really like the snout though

    Artie,

The repost looks a lot better. I am no macro expert but DOF is difficult especially when you have such relative distance between front and back.

    Tom

As far as I can see your repost just adds grain.
