Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, 2005. We spent quite a while with a herd of elephants, including this bull in musth who entertained us with lots of activity … scratching on trees, standing up on his haunches grabbing at branches, pushing trees over and generally doing what boys do including coming a little too close to our 4x4 which promptly got stuck in a very large pot hole. Safari life, love it! :)

Nice image. I like the environment portrayed. The cloud enhances the feel of the image. The depth of field is good. Thanks for sharing.

I like this a lot good colour and good clouds, OK it has the usual cluttered background but this is what it generally looks like.:)

Thanks Rachel. I tried to process this image yrs ago but never to my satisfaction. I've learned some new techniques which I'm finding is getting me much more detail. Thanks to all the helpful BPN gurus.

Like seeing the environment rather than a tight image of the elephant, just right for me !! About all I could wish was for the ele not to merge with the ridge but very minor point and nothing you cold do about it !!! Sweet !!!

Agree as above. Plus ele is a bit past you, would prefer perspective more from front.

A good habitat image, portraying the animal in it's natural environment. Think you could have shot more open raising the SS too, f/10 seems a little OTT and would have helped the BG too.

Don't understand SK - "Think you could have shot more open raising the SS too, f/10 seems a little OTT and would have helped the BG too." Do you mean getting the BG out-of-focus? For an environment shot like this I think the BG is good sharp, thus about f10 may be required.

Hi Hillary, I liked the rich, earthy tones on the elephant, as well as the clouds, and the hazy ridge in the BG, nice shot. Nice environmental shot.

Yes Tom, f/10 is an odd aperture, personally I would have shot this perhaps at f/7.1 as it would not have 'blurred' the BG that much more, but would help with shutter speed. If you want a 'sharper image' more detail/clarity in the BG, then I would have raised the ISO to 400 and shot at f/16, or f/22.

Agree, f10 is odd so I'll explain. This was shot in 2005 with my 20D and was my first digital safari so I often switched to auto (don't shoot me!) and even shot jpeg for my sins. So these older images are being processed within this constraints. Never again, although I can't say I wouldn't use f10 manually under some circumstances.

    I've enjoyed the comments, thanks.
