Taken this last Weekend. Sometimes opportunity comes your way and you take it, Sometimes you screw up and get lucky. 2 weeks ago i purchased a Canon 800mm 5.6 IS and a 7D body. I have shot Nikon for 16 years but because of the unavailable Nikon 600mm F4 VR and a 1 year wait, I made the purchase. When the Bear came into view I grabbed the 800mm adjusted the iso and inadvertently change the aperture to f8 being unfamiliar with the 7D :) All in all the lens when used correctly is razor sharp. Kudos to Canon.

    James,

Nice close-up of the bear though I feel a bit more room top and bottom would be better. Try sharpening more. I tried it and the face comes out nice and sharp and really enhances the image.

    Hi James,
I like the composition. Look forward to more images from the 800mm.

Thanks for the comments all. Al tons of stuff going on around here. Baby antelope started dropping all over the place, can't wait to get out there this weekend. Found a old tree full of raccoon babies yesterday, working on landowner permission to get a tad closer.

Hi James, I think this is one powerful bear portrait. Never easy when you are shooting a fixed lens, and at that focal length, I would be proud to have taken such a shot. I especially liked the tight compositon, the total bear BG, and those paler coloured hairs on the face, on the right side of the frame. Agree with Alfred, a print would look amazing.
