By most accounts, I am pretty happy with this shot. I like the sharpness, the eye, the crop, and the color. I even got the eye un-obscured and I am happy about that too. What I don't like is the harsh shadow. I am guessing that fill flash would make this problem go away but for the life of me, I can't seem to get fill flash to work well during the day. All I get is washed out images.
I use the Canon 30D and an EX 430 flash unit. It doesn't sync with anything over 1/250th so I am not sure how to use it. I've tried manual at 1/64 even and still washed out images. If anyone knows what I am doing wrong, I'd love the help.
hi paul, i like you flight shot. i'd like to see a little more light on his eye, but i think you'd have to get it from a different angle. as far as the flash goes, i will leave that for some of the others to comment on as they will be much more capable than me.
Hi Paul at the distance you were shooting even with the 580 would not have made any difference (even manual full power)
You did well to get as much as you did For these birds you need soft light It is also important to catch them on the full up stroke or down stroke Besides physically looking better ..... you would have no shadows (up stroke) I like the load he was carrying and getting a bird in fine breeding plumage is very nice !!!
Thanks Harold. I do need to lighten it more...
Alfred, thanks. Makes perfect sense regarding wing positioning. And thanks for the flash advice. I didn't realize it would not make it. I ordered a Better Beamer the other day. Hopefully this would help some. I also figured out I can set the flash to High Speed Sync and get it to fire at faster than 1/250...
