This is another one from Lake Blue Cypress, with Al, Fabs and Axel. I was using Al's camera
    1DMKIV 100-400 @ 400mm f/7.1 1/2500sec ISO 400.

Thanks a lot Al for letting me use the camera, got so many good shots, all courtesy of Al's perfect position of the boat, highly recommended trip.

Man you guys had to be close to get that with a 400, very impressed with the quality at 7.1 as well. I've gotten to where I don't like to go below 8 or even 10 for that lens.
    Super photo quality and composition.

We were on a boat, 100-400 should not have a problem producing a sharp photo at f/7.1, just make sure the focus is correct

Here is a 100% crop, MKIV, default DPP settings, sharp enough for me

    100-400 @ 400mm f/7.1 ISO 400 MKIV, 100% crop form RAW.

Sweet Love the pose and demeanor !!!

Stan I routinely use the lens wide open with excellent results, stop down for dof only.

Maybe it's my lens then. It's 5 years old and had some hard use. The stopping down was suggested by a friend and I have found it helpful. Honestly anything over 20 yards and I start to lose what I really want, especially with small animals like birds with feather detail. Large mammals like bears I'm still happy with.
But I don't think I've ever had quality like that at 100% crop, and I use AF just like most do, and my eyes are too old to trust as well.
I was hoping the upgrade to my 7D from the 50D would help, and it has but not as much as I hoped for.
You guys are shooting with a 1.3 crop factor correct? Think that's helping?
My next purchase will be a 5D II with full sensor, but that's at least a year away and alot of what I do is close enough.
Think having a thorough cleaning could help the lens, the 7D is barely a month old, and my 50D is only a year old.
    Thanks
    Stan

Stan, sure will not look as sharp and as clean on the 7 or 50D compared to the MKIV, but should still be good. Did you send to Canon for service if you feel it is not performing? best is to do a test with LV focus on test target to see if it needs adjustment.

Super capture Arash! Love all the details from black all the way to white. Excellent pose and eye contact. I might be tempted to clone out the vertical branch under the tail and the part of the perch that intersects the legs. Definitely going to go see Al and Fabs some day!!
