Default High ISO-good image processing makes a difference :)

I got this image in Tampa bay just before sunrise, I made a mistake and grossly underexposed this one by a full stop! Being at ISO 3200 (setting from earlier) didn't help either, however I was still able to pull this one using Canon DPP and a small amount of well-tuned NR in neat image. Results look good :D

In cases like this best is to lower sharpening, do all the exposure adjustment, apply NR and sharpen at the end.

    5D MKII 500f/4 f/4 1/6400 sec ISO 3200, 1.3EV pushed in RAW

Your PP is very good with noise on under expose image, very well done. Another problem with lighten an under expose image is the murky color.

The bird look sharp and nice details despite the high ISO and large crop, the wing down position looks good too.

The tip on sharpen should be useful ;)

Mate, that is a wonderful advertisement for using DPP, in my case, before moving to Lightroom which is my data base/initial processing program. Lovely image. I have been putting off learning DPP; now it is on the "hot" To Do list.

As an aside I want to thank you for all of the time you have taken to assist all of us with post-processing issues, and for posting the tutorials which are so beneficial. Perhaps the powers that be should consider an addition to the Digital Photography Moderators. You have my vote! :D
    Cheers, Jay

Lol, just a demo, not something I do all the time. BTW even if I throw 50% of the photo away I still have 10 Mpixels left, more than what some people get to start with

Here is the table of NR parameters I use with DPP (for Canon cameras, 5DMKII and 1DMKIV only)

I have a technical question, for the spirit of learning. 5d2 has 21 MPs. How can you be left with 10 if the image as presented is roughly 1/5 of the FF?

Arash, thanks for the chart! After you process in DPP, if I recall you do not use Lightroom. What database program do you use to organize your images?
    Cheers, Jay

Good to see the original, too. Is there some vignetting?

Hi Jay Have you checked out the new LR 3.0 The Beta version should be close to the official release but I'm sure they will throw in a couple of surprises !! As it is right now its a substantial improvement.

... Hi Arash Are those numbers for normal images only? With sever under exposure what changes are you making. I know that as you underexpose an image you can make a 5DMk2 perform like a 50D with ease !!!

... had a couple of Ospreys asking about you :) ... and the restaurant !!!

Hi Fabs, I wasn't referring to this image this one doesn't have 10 left. I was saying that categorically if I do a 50% crop which I sometimes do, I have more pixels than a standard 10 Mpixel camera which many people still use.

some vignetting (FF) exaggerated with underexposure.

    Hey Al,

Smart question :D Those numbers are for normal images, if you underexpose like what I did above it kinda of depends. for this image surprisingly the above numbers work because feathers are light and light is uniform. 5DMKII usually holds up with underexposure up to 1.5-2 stops all they way up to ISO 1600, in that case best is to lower sharpening as opposed to increasing NR. if 3200 is underexposed and bird is dark it is going to get tough, if it is more than 60% of the frame you can still salvage though, have something like that will find and post. In that case I need to run advanced noise reduction using Neat Image (can download basic version for free) in two steps, at full size and after down-sampling.

LR does not perform well for 5DMKII, not sure why, in fact when you open a 5DMKII file and a 5DMKI file the MKI file looks cleaner than MKII!!! Despite the fact that MKII sensor read noise is lower! But when you use DPP with the above parameters you just want to lick the clean and sharp files. One major difference that I see between 5DMKII and other cameras, is that sharpness does not drop with ISO. passed 1600 gets a bit noisy but stays way sharper than other cameras, so remove the noise and detail is there!!!

I miss you guys!!! Thank you so much for the treat hope I can soon pay back when you visit Cali.
