    Default Crested Caracara with Breakfast

This was one of my target species when I went to Florida and got very lucky on the first day. This Caracara flew toward me and all of a sudden dropped and landed in high grass. I couldn't see the bird anymore and hoped it would take off at some point and fly toward me. The Caracara did me the favor and carried something away. Any idea what this is?

Hi Axel, I like the down stroke of the wings and a great angle with the Caracara coming towards you. He is carrying a headless fish that was probably dropped by another bird.

Terrific capture Axel. Definitely agree with Don...it is a fish and was dropped by another bird as the Caracara does not dive for them in the water. Depends on where you were when you took this. If you were at Viera it was dropped by an Osprey or a Bald Eagle which I have seen, and then taken photos of the fish being eaten on the ground....this is really special. Congrats!

Maybe you got lucky, maybe you were just at the right place with the right plan. An image many of us wish to have in our files for sure. Food is a big bonus, eye contact, sharpness and colors are very nice. Congrats.

Thanks, Ken! This was at Joe Overstreet and there was a Bald Eagle nearby.

Stunning flight position Axel, and agree with the carrion being a fish. Kudos to you for waiting for the bird to fly away, big congrats!!!

A species I havent seen before, and I like the colours on him. Good angle and flying posture, and my first take was the catch looked like a squid.

Great capture, Axel. Wonderful downwing position, eye contact; and I love the way the color of the feet matches the head. Right place at the right time, maybe, but still took skill and patience to come away with this. I was guessing squid or chick right out of the egg, but I'll yield to those that know the area.

Great job with wing position, image detail, and exposure. Caracara are generally carrion eaters, and like hanging around with vultures, and I see them harrassed by much smaller birds quite often. Therefore, because of there non predatory nature, I would place a chick as somewhat unlikely. The problem with the image is the food item is hard to identify, looks like a fisherman's bait squid , and could also by entrails from a carcass. In any case IMO it has a negative impact on an otherwise very good image. On the other hand, if it was clearly identifiable and not something gross like guts, I think its inclusion would have a positive impact. regards~Bill
