    Default Marsh Wren

    Attached Images Attached Images

From yesterday morning on an overcast day.
50D, 500mm +1.4TC, f/5.6, 1/500, EC1.67, ISO800. I could not quite get the wren at the top of the reed and debated about pp,n an end to the reed. I left as is. It is cropped vertical from horizontal.

Nice pose. I would probably crop it as this is a small bird in a big frame.

Like it in a big way Dave Would like seeing the bird a little closer to the right bottom corner and then take a little of the left Like the room on top and singing pose !!! This is one fine image and I'm enjoying it a lot !!!

Hi Doug Posted at the same time you did !!

Small birds in frame can work well in a big way, this one does. One thing we usually want is to have it close to one of the corners !! A tight crop of the bird would also work but its just a bird singing, this is special !!! ... when it comes to this type is all about personal feel and no right or wrong !!!

I think it a very good image, and I'm very glad you didn't do any severe cropping. Excessive cropping severely damages image quality, looks like noise when it isn't, and makes it difficult to access the cause of problems, especially when the degree of cropping isn't disclosed. I would much rather see an image, like this one here, where composition is well thought out and the subject's photographic quality is good. Cropping has its place for compositional reasons, as you did here, but it often ruins an image if carried too far. Good job Dave!

Another fan of the small bird in a large frame. Great BG texture and sharp subject. I really like the birds expression and excellent light.

I feel the crop maybe could be better but have no suggestions!! So maybe not!!!!
Love the soft muted colors. Love the look/pattern of it, all of the diagonal lines, BG soft and diagonal, reed diagonal, birdy diagonal. All of seems to flow upward with his song.

Very nice capture, Dave! I agree with Al about a small bird in a big frame, singing his heart out.

My main suggestion is to mask out the bird and perch, and adjust that and background separately to bring the little singer out more dramatically. Something like this ...

Great pose. I like the amount of detail in the bird. Bg also looks good.

Thanks alot everyone for the comments and suggestions.
And David thanks for taking the time. I had wondered on how to get more separation between the bg and the bird and had tried.
Yours repost does a much better job of separation. Interesting also that in repost both subject and bg are darker and yet separation is more apparent. I also see you have cropped as suggested by Al. Good idea.
    Tks, Dave

I prefer original BG. The re-work BG looks gray or muddy. The original has a very nice light airy tone to it that really helps to make the image. Especially since the BG is such a large part of the image.

I can go with either The re post has better separation the original a different feel !! No right or wrong here just taste !! .. would probably go with re post for a better look a the bird and might try lightening the opacity to taste !!

... btw David The new noise reduction is good !!! ... same as currently in LR 3? Seems to be !!

I don't have LR, but the change from CS4 to CS5 is remarkable.

Hi Dave, Nice pose and open mouth a plus. Good cropping suggestions by Al and David's repost brings out more detail and contrast within the image. Agree with Bill on radical cropping. Can definately effect overall image quality...
