Not the most colorful bird , but a tough one to get around here. Very shy and elusive and when it does come out its always in the reeds with a dark mud BG. This is an image from 2 years ago. used a bit of fill to try and offset it from the BG. Would have liked a lower angle as well , but not to be under the conditions. Can't remember ever seeing one posted so I thought I'd share even if it's not a "killer" shot.

Cool shot with the rail calling! I would have liked to see it with less fill flash though.

A beauty Joe and not an easy one to capture. Wonderful lighting and great composition. The open beak is a lovely bonus. Well done !!!

Great find, pose, sharpness and eye contact. It looks a tad overflashed on my monitor.

I would be really happy with this one. Love the habitat and pose with the open beak and good eye contact. Fill flash worked very well in this one. :)

Love the calling pose, Joe. I like how you handled the tough light with fill flash.

Good calling pose, and I'm OK with the surroundings for these types of secretive marsh dwellers. The shadows are quite strong, and the bird quite light in some areas thus creating an overflashed look.

Hi Joe. Great shot of a very secretive bird. Not something I get to see often, and have only managed one blurry distant image on a mudbank at Brig, so in my book this is a winner. Slight overflash noted.

It may look a tad over flashed but I do understand that sometimes there is no time to set the correct flash power. Agree about this being a tough bird to find, forget about to photograph.

I would love to get a Clapper Rail and would be happy with this one. I, too, think it appears a bit overflashed. I'm at school on my small Macbook and played with it. I don't know if it helps and am not sure how it would look on a full monitor. Hope you don't mind my playing with it. Let me know what you think.

It does have a warmer feel to it. Thanks.
