Did I do this right? .... Had been shooting against bright blue sky with manual setting of ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/1250 and 1/1600. Knew this Osprey was heading for an eye level nest below the dark BG treeline. Not experienced enough to move the settings while looking through the camera...so I did the following

Switched to Aperture priority @f/2.8 (quickest way for me). I like the results but noticed how it flattened and softened the feather details....keep it or delete it? Comments and suggestions appreciated

    Nikon D300
    Nikon 300/2.8
    ISO 400
    f/2.8 @ 1/5000
    Aperture Priority
Hand Held from Boat (you know where)

    Hi Ken

When you have birds against the sky or landing they are in the same light, no exposure change if you are in manual !! The position of the bird will make a difference, overhead your going after the shaded side of the bird which is different form flaring .. direct sun !!

I like the landing pose, wish the other wing was fully shown, lack of detail sort of kills it !! ... you got lots of birds !!!!

Hi Ken, No keep or delete statement...your the final arbitor.
You caught the subject at a good moment and nicely placed within the frame.
Yes it did soften the details but also gave it a pleasing look.
I would remove the brown area near the left wing and would of shown a bit more nest...

Hi Ken - lots to like here - EXCEPT for that lack of detail - real smooth look to the body area - which for my personal tastes is a image killer.
Still doing well with these guys :)
