    Default Sri Lankan Leopard

Leopards in Sri Lanka lead an easy life. With no lions, tigers, or hyenas, they're top predator and they know it. They are quite relaxed compared to their African counterparts, and never even bother to hide their prey on trees. This young one was lying on a rock with not a worry in the world.

Yala National Park. Cloudy weather, but thanks to that he was out and about in the middle of the day. I cloned out an ugly branch from right behind his head.

So V nice. Like the rock foreground pose. Love the eye level perspective, eye contact. Great to see all four paws and tail, so many times some are hidden. Would probably do a little more cloning out of the small branches touching body/neck left and right sides. I can see your cloning pattern just above his head. But I'll still say again, V NICE!!!

Man, what a lovely image. Love the carefree "King of the mountain" look on this guy's face. Absolutely top stuff. Composition-wise well placed, me thinks. TFS. :)
Just out of curiosity: is this a subspecies of the African Leopard or the same?

That is one impressive looking animal. The eye level view is mega-powerful.

Loved the dead straight look by the Feline here. As mentioned by Art, the eye level view nails this one.

Great image, I think this is the first Sri Lankan Leopard I have ever seen.

    Were you on a "jeep"?

Very nice. I like the low angle. I like the details in the leopard. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you all.
Tom, I'll try to be more careful with the cloning, thanks for pointing it out.
Akos, this is a different subspecies, Panthera pardus kotiya. They are supposed to be the largest of them all, but otherwise they look very much like African ones.
Ken, yes I was on an open jeep; you're not allowed to take your own vehicle at Yala NP.

    Best,

Very nice image of this kotiya leopard! Out of curiousity, do they all have black noses there? Most leopard, even old ones, still have largely pink noses here in Africa.

Interesting point, Egil. I've checked many pictures of Sri Lankan leopards and, yes, it seems that all have black noses, or at least very dark brown. So this might be a good distinction. Mind you, there are currently 24 recognized subspecies... I don't know if that's characteristic of any others.

A beautiful image of a beautiful cat. He looks so relaxed, and that eye contact is simply wonderful. That's a very interesting observation about the black nose! I need to look up the leopard images from India and see whether they, too, have black noses.
