Another of the 4 great species of woodpeckers we had the opportunity to photograph in Arizona a few weeks ago. Thanks again to Alan Murphy for a fantastic 3 days.

Gorgeous image Joe! I am quite in awe. Nice to see it sharp head to toe and the BG is very complimentary. I only wish for a little more space on top. Well done! :)

Thanks Akos. I had some more at the top but didn't like it with the head in the center. I did it this way to get the head/eye in the upper 1/3. matter of taste I guess.

Super pose Joe, and I like how he is looking out into space. Good colours around the head, and I feel the top is OK with me.

And be sure to thank Bill Forbes for all his work in making Alan's workshop successful -- Bill provides the locations, water features, continuous feeding throughout the year, props used for perches, blinds, as well as the suet attractant. Bill's not cheap but neither is keeping the birds coming in to a central location. Book him at "the pond" (I'm not affiliated with Bill, other than a happy user of his sites).

Nice sharp detail and good exposure in the blacks. I like the way the texture of the bark and the texture of the bird work together.

Lovely pose and colors, exposure on the blacks, nice and sharp. BG seems a hair noisy, and I might reduce the contrast on the bark to make the subject pop a little more :)

ps- I just got back from SE AZ and I didn't get anything close to this good on this spp:p

I think you are refering to Bill Forbes.

Absolutely stunning capture Joe. You got just enough of the perch in to see the detail but not to much to pull attention away from the bird. The exposure work is perfect with tremendous detail in both the dark and light areas of the bird. So well done!!! Oh yeah the pose rocks too.

Gorgeous woodpecker shots. I love the pose and blacks. I would suggest to tone done the highlights a bit more, especially on the bark, also if you have it a bit more room for the virtual tail on the bottom would be good. Still great shot!
