I find this a difficult bird to get a good image of. I see them regularly but don't get that many opportunities to capture an image of one. Sony A700 70-400G @400mm, f8, 1/640, iso1000, ev +3.0, hh
levels, curves, sharpen, sky was blown so I added some color. I would have prefered a better angle and if the head was titlted towards me but he didn't stay perched here for long.

Hi Peter. I envy your proximity to these birds; I've yet to capture a decent image of one and am lucky to see them at all. They do seem to perch in high places, thus the steep capture angle here. Also agree a head turn would have helped. I guess the trick is to stake out a nest hole and watch it for hours on end.

They are a tough bird and an interesting one. I have had them land right in my camp site, on the ground when my camera was not handy! I guess we just have to ready for that one really good opportunity.

Comp. might work well as a vertical.

Photo may have a bit of blue colour cast.

This is a good capture, Peter. They are wary of humans and tough to get out into the open. They also don't hang around and pose on branches for you!

Thanks, Bill, Dave and Julie. I appreciate your comments.
Bill, I actually have been observing a nest since it was being built in the spring. I went to it yesterday and hid in the brush for twenty minutes before the baby stuck its head out. I got some images of it but none that i was really satisfied with. I need anothe 200mm of focal length.

Hi Peter - Patience and observation - then the hard work will pay off.
Does seem to have a bit of a colour cast and agree with your own self assessment.
    Keep em coming :)

Hi Peter, Thats been an elusive species to me. Heard them and seen them from afar but not had a shot.
