Thanks to Robert O'Toole for his BIF pano inspiration and to Jim Neiger for his continued help with my big lens BIF hand-holding techniques and his Blue Cypress/Osprey Heaven invitations :)

The five original images were created with the handheld Canon 500mm f/4L IS lens with the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaulative metering -1/3 stop off the lightest green vegetation down sun angle: 1/1600 sec at f/6.3. AI Servo central sensor AF with all of my MIV settings as per the MIV User's Guide.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

ps: the top of the landing tree and the perch were cloned out of all but the last frame in the series.

They look like great individual images, but the combination doesn't work for me Artie.

My natural inclination is to interpret this image as a panning sequence with the leftmost bird position accurately reflecting the distance from the landing spot.

Of course, as a novice, I'd love to have captured any one of the frames myself.:)

Great idea. I should do the same with some of my landing shots as well.

I like the pano and I'm loving these Osprey shots. The possibiliteis are endless regarding stitching/blending images these days and I think we are going to be seeing a lot of it in the future. Thanks for the inspiration. Is this the actually sequence of landing shots or did you randomly choose and stitch these images?

Thanks Nick. I rather like it too and am proud of is :)

There were seven images in the sequence--all of the same bird and the same landing. One, the second one, was soft. And the wing position of the next to last one did not fit well so I scrapped that one too.

Amazingly, all of the images in the pano (and therefor all seven of the images in the sequence) were created in the same one hundredth of a second, as the EXIF indicated 08:12:06 for each. So that is at least 7 fps. (My understanding has always been that 10fps was only for One-Shot AF or manual focus....)

Artie, I like the sequence and the nice details. I think the final approach w/ the tree and perch is a great touch.:)

Thanks Peter. We were a bit lucky as the wind shifted slightly to the east/northeast as the morning went on... It had been bad before that, more from the north with a touch of west so that the landing birds were--for the most part-angling slightly away from us....

No shock there. It was tough enough at the start of the morning both days that I was there.... North by slightly west.... Just a tad in our faces....

Glad that you liked the pano. :)

Thanks Joe et al. The idea was all Robert O'Toole's. He has done many mostly take-offs with Sandhill Cranes at the crane pools at Bosque.

Thanks Stuart. Getting rid of the stuff below was easy with only the Clone Stamp Tool. The only tough part was adjusting and blending the slightly different sky tonalities from frame to frame. Surprising seeing that I was in manual mode

great idea Artie, love the sequence! I was thinking there was one landing Al, Fabs Axel and I got the same angle firing off 10 fps burst, I was thinking we should make a movie out of that

A very interesting image and very well done. I agree with others that the PP work is superb. I viewed the large image trying to find something you missed but couldn't.

Excellent composition on the pano from one end to the other.

The only think I might have tried was just a tad bit more blue sky below as it starts to look a bit cramped on the bottom on the last two portions.

Thanks Jim and for the suggestion too. The only problem there is that the perch got really ugly below what you see and extended well to the left... So there were many, many benefits of ending it where I did :)

    Love it Artie.

You have to see it in the larger size, the small jpeg is not as impressive.
