From a series a little while ago - Observing these guys I noticed late in the day they would stop and perch on this perch for a little while - so with that knowledge just waited for the right time and light - the BG is reflection of flowering bushes in the water.

Fantastic! This is a new species for me. That eye just pops right out of those dark feathers. Can't beat that background and I like the way you composed with just a small part of the perch do its size vs the bird. Great stuff as expected Lance.

Wow, there is so much to like about this image. Super sharp great detail, bg, light, pose...
I like that you can see the point of the raised foot.
If i had too pick one thing to correct it would be the double catch light in the eye.
    Congrats on this one.

Hi Lance, beautiful image! Perfect amt of fill flash which shows good detail in the blacks and whites. Complimentary muted backround along with good positioning within the frame. The perch is also interesting!
    Very well handled!

Stunning image: perch, ha, raised foot, bit of yellow plumage, bg; beautiful use of flash exposure with detail in blacks and whites. Leaving in the double catchlight gave us just one thing to nitpick in an otherwise awesome image.

Lovely image Lance. I really like that little splash of yellow colour.

Perhaps a little less perch to get rid of the oof part?

Good tip on checking out the bird's patterns and then waiting for photo opportunity. Tks.

    Hi Lance,

There's a lot to like here and nothing to dislike. The black and whites show detail, good contrast, specs spot on I'd say. Great shot, nice bird. You should be a Moderator !!!

Big WOW from me Lance...love the comp, BG, perch, HA and the tiny raised foot peeking out from those perfectly exposed feathers...plus the bird is beautiful...double catchlight is personal. Didn't know my lense could do that :)..of course I do not have the D3...but it was probably you all along. I vote for you being a Moderator also!!!!

Lance, this is by far the best shot I have seen from your posts since I first joined few months ago.
Wow, great control of the flash.

Once again - thanks for the kind words.
This one was a outtake from the series that I posted mid last year :) so must have thought this one was not quite as good for some reason.
Would have preferred the slightly darker area's of the BG to be more of the lighter golden colour.

Fantastic image Lance. Really nice composition. Such a great looking bg, very nice colours. Excellent details, ha and eye contact.
Did you have VR turned on or off for this image?

VR turned ON - Until recently I always had VR turned on - Unless on a tripod.
AM experimenting a little now - with not using VR depending on the circumstances :)

Really, really gorgeous image mate. Totally great pose and nice perch, BG, etc... well done. I usually use IS, even on a tripod as I never tighten the head. But the Thom Hogan article made me think a little. :) Cheerio....

May be down in Melbourne later this year. I am hoping for July..... :)
