    Default Tree Swallow Hunting

After picking up my new 500mm, I thought I would not do much in-flight shooting again with the more diminutive birds, as we all know, the 500mm is great for reach, color, bokeh and sharpness, but seemingly lacks the lightning fast AF of my old 400 f/5.6. So I practiced for 3 to 4 hours shooting swallows hunting mosquito larvae at a local pond right at the edge of the bank and tried to get as close to eye level with this 3 inch tall bird as I could! This was the most interesting catch of the series. It would appear that the 500mm CAN do in-flight shots afterall! :D:D:D (well with a much lower keeper rate) Haha!

Canon 7D (65% crop) Do you see the larvae in his beak? :D:D:D

Since I have been shooting these guys recently I appreciate the difficulty. I wish I could see the eyes a little better and I wish there was a little more detail under the wings. Perhaps some flash, but I will let the experts comment on the technique. Nice capture on such a small bird.

It's not the lens that takes the picture, its the photographer using good technique...

Thank you for your critique Nick! I wish I had a flash with me this day. His eyes were pretty much focused in the downward position. I didn't get a shot of him looking at me :(

Great action shot Conrad love the wing positions, it seems that there is a problem with IQ though, the image is somewhat noisy and lacks details, if you have the CR2 file email it for me I will try to see what I can do with it

    Best,
