This is apparently a venomous (one fatality recorded) snake species. I am quite fond of them and have seen my fair share in recent weeks. Have actually developed a real affinity for reptiles lately. :D

I wish I had two flashes to get a more realistic lighting, but that's all I got.

    Akos:

I don't know where this image was taken, but if it was taken in North America I don't believe this is a venonmus snake.. Venonmus snakes in North America do not have round eyes, they have eliptical eyes like a cat.. If this image was not taken in North America, then I stand corrected and apologize..
You might add your country location to your profile, so we will know what country you are from..

Eastern small-eyed snakes ARE venomous & native to the land downunder. And there ARE a couple of species of North American venomous snakes that have round pupils - Eastern Coral Snake, Texas Coral Snake, & Arizonal Coral Snake...

Very nice shot, Akos. You are up close & personal with that fellow, and you timed the shutter release perfectly to catch that tongue flick! Looks like a difficult exposure with the bright sand & dark snake, but great detail everywhere. Well done.

This was in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. The substrate, while it looks like sand, is actually light colored sandstone, typical of the habitat where the snake lives. :) It is venomous, and potentially deadly. ;) I should have added its scientific name which is: Cryptophis nigrescens
