Looks a little soft to me. Did you do any sharpening?

Agreed. It could probably use some more.

    Hi Ian

I'm not familiar with that combo !! Would test on a test target to see what the lens can do !! Try without converter first then converter .. compare in computer btw for the test use high quality jpeg and in camera sharpening for ease of comparison !!

I'm sure you can get a little more sharpening out of it but any soft image looks strange when sharpening Would increase contrast a bit more and can lighten the face a bit more. btw sharpest part seems to be on the shoulder? From a boat you will have a low keeper rate so take many !!! ... one more .. would raise ISO to 400, might get a little noise but easy to clean, just make sure not to under expose !!!

Thanks for the comments/suggestions, Alfred. The combination can be reasonably sharp (although the 1.4x clearly softens it a bit) when used with my 7D, so I'm not sure it's the optics' fault. I'll go back and play with the image some more and see where it gets me.

Sorry Ian, IMHO it hasn't made any impression, I fear it is just a soft image. I would also drop to say f/5.6 to help SS too, as f/10 is not really going help much on the DOF here. If you are going to try this again, would suggest working with the boat, ie when the boat drops down you also do with the lens, as it rises up so do you, ready to fire once the target is in view.

    Hi Ian

Great advice from Steve regarding shutter speed and working with the boat !!! I like the lightening but the sharpening didn't do much, when they are a little soft will look strange when sharpening ... btw when sharpening do look at the image at 100% !!!
