    Classic woodpecker comp here. I might consider just a sliver off of the right side. The lighting is quite dramatic, but I would prefer a bit more even illumination of the bird. The exposure of the reds looks good.

    Nothing better than a pileated in the morning.

    For me it's a bit more room above that I would prefer (you can see how comps can often be subjective, eh!). I do agree with the lighting issue though...going even higher on the EC and/or fill flash would have worked wonders here.

    Always a nice bonus to spot one of these elegant woodpeckers!!

    Ryan I agree with the other guys about the lighting in the body needing some more pop but you did get some nice illumination on the face which to me is the most important area. Getting a pileated at all is never a bad thing. Congrats on the opportunity.

    Another vote for some brightening. You should be able to pull some more detail out of there without too much trouble at ISO 800 on the 7D. I wish he were turned toward you a bit more.
