Hoopoe returning to the nest with a snack for the chicks.

Image Copyright 2010: Robert OToole Photography .com

Nikon D700 with MB-D10 and AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/4G ED VR and ISO 3200. manual mode -2/3 compensation (yes you can use compensation in manual mode) 1/2500th @ F11. Full frame, almost no crop except for the top and bottom strips for the aspect ratio.

Hoopoe are so fast at this distance using trap focus was the only way to get something full frame like this since we were in a hide that was set up for a 500mm with a fullframe body or a 300mm on a 1.5-1.6 body. Trap focus is pre-focusing on a predetermined distance and hitting the shutter when you see an orange flash in this case. They like to bank on the way in so it was not easy, even using this focus method.

These guys are unbelievably fun to photograph, Peter Kes and I were photographing side by side and had a great time, Peter got some really good ones also. This image was made during a Photo tour series I led in southern Hungary.

Normally I dont shoot at ISO 3200 but I was using Auto ISO because of the constantly changing light and 3200 was the limit I had set. I had to run a pass of nosieware pro on 80% strength. How does it look on your computer?

Looks fantastic. Noise? What noise with D700?:):);)
The pose and flight capture is simply incredible,
the snack, HA, fully fanned crest and wings position all together in a flight image of this species
(very fast woodpecker-like flight pattern) is really something special.

Robert, well done on the noise front. doesn't look like an iso3200 image whatsoever. And that iso has allowed you to not make any compromises on SS or f-stop. awesome. The crest really takes this one at the top. Awesome wing spread.

Looks great with sweet BKGR and a killer wing position.

Wonderful capture!! Would you consider removing the bright spots in the lower left of the frame?

Looks like an IOTW in the making! :)

Congratulations! A very difficult bird to catch in flight, and you got it with wings and crest spread, and lunch in the bill as a bonus. Well done indeed. High ISO looks OK to me.

    Gyorgy,

Wish i was still there, things are just starting to get up to speed.

I am in warsaw for a few days, then I have to rush back to the US for some obligations. I would love to head back as soon as I can.

My group and I was with Bence, but the Hoopoe are so habituated we can use normal non glass hides, I always prefer the black mesh if the birds dont mind!

So you are in Eagle and Falcon country? Are the red-footed Falcons very active this year so far? Things are late in the south with all the rain.

    Hi Artie,

No manual, I used my normal Back Button only AF technique. Lock on a spot and dont hit the Back button again when you fire the shutter.

Gosh Robert, that has to be the smallest "lizard" I have ever seen!!

Wonderful image - wing position and high crest are splendid. Background still looks a little noisy on my screen, but I am looking very hard! The bird looks great - are you using NR on the bird also?

    Best regards,

    Gerald

Thanks for the comment, NR on the BG and darks in the wings. I used a mask to protect the head. Normally I dont shoot at 3200 as a rule but I am happy with the results here.

I was told it rained all day, all night and part of the next after we left!

I looked at the thumbnail and I knew it was from your workshop in Hungary. I miss my country when I see the images posted here from there. I hope I get there to Bence's location soon.....This image is pretty stunning...as expected from you..love the wing position and the head angle; food is a bonus. Hard to believe it is ISO3200 with such a little noise.Glad you had a good time there and I am sure you will return with many new participants.

looks good, HA and bg are very nice and feather pattern is also very interesting. D700 shouldn't have any issues at 3200 in good light, I never hesitated to use 3200 when I had one, CNX2 would take care of any BG noise and keep all the details! excellent camera, sure miss it.

Very good job getting this one Robert. Action is just killer and noise is very pleasant considering the high ISO, you did a very good job applying noise reduction only to the areas of the image that needs. Hope to see more images from Hungary :-)
