Lance,
Fabulous shot - great movement, everything spot on (as expected :D). Would it be possible to turn this around a bit. Instead of the rest of us giving a critique of this photo, would it be possible for it to be a two way thing - we might learn more.
As I said - great photo but I find the overall affect a bit dark. Bird is perfect, light lovely but the rest I find dark. Can you tell us why I am wrong (which I presume I am). I have some photos that appear like this and I spend a long time trying to improve them but it never works because I ruin the main focus - the bird.
Thanks
Michael

looks good lance, like everything, sharpness water drops and low angle. the only nit is red channel is blown in small parts of the belly, with these guys I tend to go -2/3 to -1EV, especially when BG is dark to maintain the highlights. pulling up the blacks with D3S is a piece of cake

Hi Michael - everything in photography is a compromise - my own personal ethics (and that is really all it is) is to expose for the subject and let the rest fall were it may.
I strive to get everything as close as possible in camera - i make very few changes in PP - Usually limited to levels, sharpening and cropping - Rarely do any removal of background objects etc - once again just personal ethics.
Just my ethics - doesnt mean yours has to be the same!!
Rarely happy with many of my shots - always thinking I could have done it better - always seeing ways to improve it next time.

I will give it a punt
Before i cast my line let me add that i think these kind of things are brilliant, interactive tutorials so to speak, more fun way to improve technique then use a book imo :D
Assuming it was taken in Raw, could you not change the red rgb in there on the Red Levels thingy (technical term but my brain is made of mashed carrots today!)
It will be interesting to see how this thread continues to develop.
Lance, with the zoom capability of the Sigmonster, were you able to move back and get a full reflection of this guy?

Another tough subject to shoot with big contrast.
Exposure wise, I think it is good, except I find that this is over sharpened a bit. The dark lines along the head, plus the legs.
Did you apply NR?
A lovely shot, Lance. BG color is beautiful, as is the bird and the forward-leaning pose. Doesn't look to dark to me, and whites are only a tiny bit off on my screen. My only complaint in a perfect world is that the bill falls in front of a dark spot in the bg, and thus doesn't separate itself enough to see clearly. A minor nit for a nice capture.
