    This guy is a new arrival to one of the local parks. He is fairly tame until you point a lens at him, maybe just camera shy. Would like to know how to sharpen this guy better to prevent halos. I could not select the background due to the differences. When I adjusted the tolerance it started to select bird as well. Also is there anything I could change the next time I try to photograph this guy.

    Great work with a skittish species, Trey! I love the long-sloping bills of the Canvasback. The water color here is terrific and adds a nice touch of color to this image. I think it might be nice to lighten the head and dark feathers just a bit. Nothing drastic, but I'd probably give this a little 'Fill Light' in raw conversion. As far as selecting the bird, I'd probably go with a quick mask where you actually "paint" the selection with your paintbrush. It wouldn't have to be exact, but if you feathered the edge you could select most of the bird and sharpen just that...still the sharpness looks pretty goo on this image to me.
