Close to full frame. I was thinking (at the time) F7.1 would work well. Now I'm thinking I might have needed a bit more DOF. Comments and critique welcomed. regards~Bill

Hi Bill - Sharp as a tack - lovely detail and like the pose/composition.
Happy with it just as it is.
    Good show :)

Another with good sharpness with lots of feather details. This one already look good as it is, however I somehow like your Stilt image better, maybe because that one is more colorful (just a personal taste).

Bill, you sure are getting close to these birds. I don't see anything wrong with the DOF. As with the stilt, I find it a little tight for my tastes, specially in lower right corner.
    Excellent work

    Bill,

Greetings. Another great headshot! I'm beginning to wonder if you're just after self-portraits ;)

How close are you? DOF calculator says dof at 20ft 400mm & f/7.1 only gets you about 2.4 inches dof, f/10 only gets you to 2.76 inches. The closer you get the less difference a stop makes for dof.

I wouldn't worry about the little bit of softness on the bottom (nothing that kneeling in the water to flatten out the angle wouldn't cure :D ).

Good show! How do you get so close?

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

Hi Bill, This image is well handled technically. Sharp and nicely muted backround. I would prefer a bit more room in the front of the bird....

Hi Bill Have never had one that close so I could do a head shot :) Sweet image and like it a lot !!

I think you did great, dof wise all you can do is zero in on the eye and have the proper bill angle for max coverage (not angled much from film plane)

Not sure how close but might be even closer to 20 ... and btw figuring out dof at different distances as Michael is doing does help for settings, just best not to be over preocupied with it !!! iPod is great for figuring out and now with the iPad will be even better :D good reason go get one :)
