I realize that the bg may be a busy but this is the environment in which these birds are found. They sit about 3 to 4 feet above the ground in vegetated areas around rivers and creeks. Moving frequently to eat insects or fruit.

Hi Joe Fine looking bird, nailed the exposure, pose and sharpness !

Bg does not bother me but you can make a couple of adjustments. While making the image moving a couple of feet to the left would place the head in a cleaner position .. also tail. I know sometimes is just not possible maybe because you got a tree to your left etc but do look for those possibilities.

Tech wise would shoot wide open rather than stopping down one, blurring bg would be a priority over dof .. and you would not be gaining much of it !!! Well done and like it a lot !!!

    Good for you Joe.
Mi wife and I were at Patagonia a couple winters ago and spent time looking for this fellow.
Thanks for the tips on where they hang out; we'll be back.

You did really well because the bush is pretty thick back in there.

Nice feather details, good pose by the bird with good HA, love how you compose the bird in frame. I don't mind the background that much, but the shadow cast on the bird by branches is a little distracting.

Thats a lovely bird, I'm a bit distracted by the branch that intersects the bird but what can you do? Its a really nice capture of a bird I've never seen where i live!
