Taken in the Timbavati Private Reserve in South Africa in August 2009. This was one of the big males in the region. He was nursing a couple of wounds on his hind leg at the time. As you can see, he had a very full and dark mane.

Hi Rachel - I really like this - can post it a little larger at 800PX.
Like the eye contact and the colours - expression on the face also appeals to me.
Might just clone out the dark upper left hand corner.
Good show :)
Ahh, the Timbavati Reserve, one of my favorite safari camps there, Kings Camp. Two very good photographers and guides there, Patrick and Morne. I was there just after you in Sep of 2009, have two interesting lion photos I'll put up. Lot of lion dynamics going on there last year, including some white cubs late last year (I did not see).
Like your shot, good eye contact, would crop some off left side.

Lance - Thanks, I hadn't even noticed the dark area but now that you mention it ...
Tom - Patrick was sitting right next to me when I took this photo. I spent 5 nights at Kings Camp with a group of friends and had arranged to have Patrick as my Ranger based on a recommendation. I have followed the updates about the white lion cubs on the Kings Camp weblog throughout the year. We saw their mother who clearly had some white genes in her. We had amazing lion viewing while we were there. I think we saw 7 different males and a lesser number of females and cubs.
Neat Rachel, I've been to Kings Camp four times. Lions and a number of leopards around there also. Isn't the food, staff, everyone there just great. Probably this year, 2010, I'll not go to Africa, but sure will in 2011.

Reason: corrected year to 2010
All: I cloned out the dark area (though I am new to PS and actually used Elements) and also wanted to make sure I can save and upload the right size image so here is a repost. Thanks again for the comments. Btw I did not particularly like the image with a crop on the left. I have others of the same lion that are portrait rather than landscaped image but liked this one better. Thanks again.
