Default Osprey at Blue Cypress Lake

I have been out at Blue Cypress the last few days and boy oh boy is this the place for osprey's. The Middleton's are terrific people and Joe Middleton guided us on the pontoon boat to get some great images. The Nikon 500 f/4 was attached to the D300, f/7.1, iso 640, 1/1600.

Nancy, Nice sharp details and good eye contact. I might try to eliminate some of the blue from the far wing. The whites on the head appear a tiny bit muddy and there is a dark spot above the head. I'm looking forward to trying out your harness, it's a great idea. Those big lenses are very heavy to HH.:)

Agree with Arash on the pose and with Denise on the blue cast to the upper primaries. The whites are beyond muddy. They are beyond grayed out. Were you trying to save them?

I toned down the whites on the head, but did nothing else with any of the other parts of the bird. I was told that some of the birds were in heavy molt.

You botched the toning down big time. How do I know? I have done the same thing. To learn a ton, click here: http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ead.php?t=8197 You will find "How White the Whites?" In the Tutorials and Educational Resources Forum.

Did you have any problem recovering the whites when you converted?

Please post a JPEG of the image right after conversion.

As for the blue on the dorsal surface of the far primaries, that is a result of that part of the wing being in shadow; it can easily be removed.

It looks as if this bird is molting some of its flight feathers; were you implying that molting had something to do with the blue cast on the far wing?

Thanks Artie! I did have a bit of trouble recovering the whites and will look at the article. As far as the molting goes nothing about the blue but the less white of some of the birds. Where some of the birds were like this, others where they had already molted were very, very white. I went back checked my color space and monitor color profile, for I just installed a new OS and worked in CS5, which is new, and boy I had some things off. I redid and this is my repost. Thanks all for pointing these things out!
