    Alfredod200,

only get the 1.7X if you really need the reach. Image quality degrades much more with the 1.7X than the 1.4X and the AF slows down substantially. you will also be forced to shoot at much higher ISO's with the 1.7X (minimum aperture is f6.7). Your D200 is not the best at higher ISO's therefore your image quality will suffer.

    hope this helps!

agreed your D200 will suffer as my D2x does at anything above 400

I find that with good NR ISO 400 is ok for good quality pics, in this case i would say go for the 300 AFS with the 1.4 convertor so that you dont have to stop down too far

Either that or twist his arm and get a 70-200 AFS VR I (not the vr II) and the 1.7 ;) for a better range :) depends on what you are taking pics of really if its small stuff then the 300 with 1.4 will be better.

Another vote for the 1.4, better image quality.

If you are shooting the D200 would go for the 1.4 !!!

    Yep, TC14EII all the way....:)

Try cropping for the little extra reach you might need...the TC17EII is much tougher to use on the 300/4.

While I agree the 1.4 is superior, don't rule out the 1.7. With proper technique is is quite capable. My wife uses this combo a lot and has produced many excellent images.
