Taken out my archives from 2008. We were on a night drive in the Sabi Sands Private game reserve and came across this guy waking up for his night patrol. The light is both from the spot light of the vehicle, and my flash. Please note the spot light is never held directly into their faces or eyes.

It's well done but I don't think this does the animal justice.

Agree with wijnands. I take a flash with me on safari game drives but don't use it unless it a rare animal sighting and then it is only a "record" shot.

Hi Stuart, agree with Al, the combination has worked well, but I night drives for me, the camera stays packed away. If you have it, then I would like more room on the lhs and less on the rhs purely because of the head looking to the left. again, hint more in Curves just pops it especially in the mane area. :)

    Hi Stuart,
I think the lion was sleeping and then stretched before it moves on for hunt. I guess you would have seen a yawn as well. You had done well with the lighting, however, I personally don't like the shadows due to the flash.

I have tried using spot light on animals to see how they react. In the college days, the spot lights and the head lights of the vehicles were too feeble to stop the animal in the tracks (am talking about the eighties). I am sensitive to using flash in the night. Also, I don't like the shadow due to the flash. So both these things make me keep my camera packed in the night. At one point of time I used to drive along to see some nocturnal animals. These days, either I sit on a waterhole in the night or just sleep. :)

    Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,
    Sabyasachi
