Default Burrowing Owl - Morning Flight

This has to be one of the most difficult birds I've ever tried to photograph in flight. They are too fast and small. Usually by the time I get a lock on him/her? it's flying away from me or the images are all soft.

At least I had a few in focus (out of 60+ shots :D )

This was taken this morning handheld with EOS 7D+Canon 400 5.6L; 1/2500; ƒ/5.6; ISO 800; manual metering +2/3 off the grass. Cropped 30% to 8x10 dimension.

Really nice capture. Good detail and the face is wonderful. The composition is well done with created line/angle of the wings but with the forward momentum implied.
Regarding out-of-focus shots - it only takes one in focus to make a great image:).

Michael, Congratulations! These little owls are tough. You have very nice sharpness. I wish the front wing was positioned a little better-but I would take this shot over any that I have so far-which is none! Great job staying with it.:)

Nice and sharp, and just enough separation from the BG. I agree the front wing's position is not optimal but I too would be very happy with this!!

    Michael,

Don't feel bad. I too found Owls are one of the hardest birds to captured when they are in flight. :)
You got the head in focus, I love the composition, BG etc. Well done!

    Terrific shot Mike.

Can you tell me where in Florida, close to Orlando, I might be able to get some pictures of these owls? I am planning a trip to Orlando with the family this summer and hope to get a chance to photograph them.

    Zethar,
You probably have more luck going to Cape Coral, FL or South East Florida where there are at many places.
