What a treat! The spoonbills are nesting for the first time at the AF. Quite a number of them could be seen gathering sticks, courting and more. The bird in this photo was very close to his mate sitting atop a nest. I took some cool video of behavior, and will be sending a number of images along with the video off to Audubon shortly.

Beautiful spoonbill portrait, Chas. Perfect exposure and nice colours - I tend to end up with overexposed lights/whites in the neck, while you've got great detail here. Like the comp - head's centred, but nice diagonal created by the body. Tack sharp. I might see some noise in the dark green background, and maybe the green leaves.

Charles, like I said on the other site, I love the composition, sharp photo. If it were my shot, I would warm it up just a tiny bit.

    Chas,

Love the preening image, great shot. Perfect EV with spot metering, lot's of detail too. What about the BG issue Jory mentioned, is that noise or the results of a NIK pass?

Strong Image and love the composition!

    Jeff,

I do not see the noise at the res and size posted on my monitor. However, I find the MIV is not all it is cracked up to be in the lum and color noise dept with rectangle shaped look at high ISO. To be honest I much prefer the overall QC of my IDs MIII bodies, but the MIV focuses much better on moving subjects, the color is fantastic, along with video, high res LCD, vert/horz AF selection, and more make the camera most appealing.

Chas, were they that close and at almost eye level? I've only seen them perched on the snags or the higher trees. I'm gonna head up there next week so I'm psyched.

    Michael,

You can shoot them with a 70-200. You are in for a real treat. There were approx 30 hanging around at last count.

    Best,

    Chas
