Normally one would go with the wings up or the wings down position, but I like this one since it shows lots of wing and tail detail, as well as represents the hovering that the tern commonly does.

this position is affectionately referred to as a PANCAKE!!:D not a preferred position, but works in some cases. the main problem here is the light. it left the eye dark. i cant make it out at all. maybe some lightening of that area and a catchlight would help. best to get the sun behind you for these shots. the wind from the same direction as the light is a grand slam!!

I have a shot of the same bird with the sun directly behind, and although there is a small catchlight, you still can't see the eye.

it's a tough shot! with that area being so dark, you would blow the whites in order to expose it. some brightening in pp would bring it out more though. in this one, it still looks like the sun is from back right and the head is angled away slightly missing the direct light. and btw, i like this pose tons better!!

I like them both. Certainly, this one has more of a feeling of action. Could you please elaborate on the reasons that you like this pose better?

i like the wing position better. you get to see more of the form of the bird. and with the light being closer to being decent on the eye, i know it will be easier to pull more detail out of it.

Hi Michael, I prefer the 2nd to the first for a number of reasons.
    1.Better wing position
    2.Sharper
    3.Fills more of the frame
4.While I can't make out the shape of the eye it's dilineated by the catchlight.

Although I also like the second shot best for the reasons detailed by Dave, I have to disagree with H regarding the first image being a pancake. A pancake image is usually directly a side view, your image is mostly from the front of your subject. IMO

Agree with OZ on the pancake issue. I prefer the original, not crazy about the folded wings in the second. OP can be cropped tighter.

... Michael .. only one post per thread and can re post same if needed, will leave second up this time :)

For the first you need to have a clearly visible eye to make it work .. and not easy with that bird !!! Would crop tighter top/bottom !! The second has an appeal since you can see the eye and like the wing position .. straighter would be even better !! ... btw possible to have more feather detail on the second, makes the image !!!

I agree with Oscar, too. To me, the most important thing that this "pancake-like" wing position works here is because the point of view is not at the same level with the bird from either the side or the front,...or from the rear for that matter. :)

I apologize for the second post. Also, thanks to everyone for the helpful comments. I have tried to "brighten" the eye in the original post, (and a somewhat tighter crop). This is the best I could do. Maybe a little better. Thanks again.
