Default Calling all past and present D2x/D2xs owners!...help needed!

    Hey guys,

Little background...I had a d2h, thought it was great as long as you could fill the frame, had no cropping ability at all due to the low mp. The shutter box failed on this and I had to drop down to my backup D100 and after 6 months managed to get a good low useage D2x (only had 7000 clicks on it!) Before that I had a D1, then a D1x.

Now help needed from some kind gents...

I have been having a few little quirks with the camera, I am 99% sure its technique that is burning me out here and not the camera or the lenses.

The Af appears to be a nightmare, I know the lenses are sharp (previous experience on the d100 and d2h) and i can get some sharp images from the camera.

Basically i am looking for some pointers from people who have used the camera to its kwirks and any helpful advice they can give from thier experience of using it

If it helps here is a list of the glass I am using on it

    18-70 F3.5-4.5 Nikkor
    50mm 1.8 Nikkor
    85mm 1.8 Nikkor
    70-300 VR Nikkor
    300 F4 (non afs) Nikkor

I also have the 180mm 2.8 ED* and the 105mm f4 Macro as well manual AI lenses.

I am looking at getting a 70-200VR in the next 3 or 4 months but takes a little time when you are only 27 and not a banker ;)

Any help and advice would be most welcome, I love the camera and really want to make the most of it, shame that Nikon wont be making any more pro quality Dx cameras all gone FF now :(

Thanks in advance guys I know there must be some D2x owners past or present on here who maximised the use from the camera!

(even if it comes down to just needing to get better glass in the future!)

If AF is an issue with your lenses it probably needs to go in for repair. I've had a D2x for several years now and have never had a problem with the AF.

I too have had a D2X for several years (since 2005) and have had no problems with focusing. My primary use was with the 200-400 F/4 and the 600 F/4 AFS. I even rated the focusing as pretty decent with the 1.4 and 1.7 Nikon converters. In addition, I used the camera with numerous shorter lenses and had no focusing problems. As Alan said, the D2X may need to be checked by a repair service.

    Hey Guys,

thanks for the input, i took it to a service center, they were good enough to check it over for me for a minimal fee and said there was nothing wrong with it. They showed a few tweaks to the af system and it seems much better now :)

The only problem I have had with my D2Xs is that it all of a sudden started giving me ERR messages after I shot. The website says swap the battery out evn if it still shows juice. That did not solve it. So I sent it in to Nikon's NY Service Center. Costs me $300, there was a shutter issue. They cleaned it while they had it which was fine. However they reset all my settings. It took me awhile to get things back the way I wated.

Sorry, can't be much help, but my office D2x's sensor failed on me and Nikon wanted a princely sum to fix, and this with a miniscule number of actuations! I was not impressed.

Hey Peter I work for a news outlet in washington d.c and the photographers here are now of course using D3's but not to long ago we all used the D2xs and the AF was one of the best features of the camera if your having problems with AF I'd send it to nikon. Its not as fast as the new systems but it was fast enough to track fast moving subjects.
