Hi Oscar, good head position but the head looks a bit soft on my monitor.I might try and tone down the bright leaf in the backround since it is distracting. To better balance the image I would crop some off the right side. I found that a D300 ISO can be pushed to 800 without much noticeable noise...

    Oz,

Agree with Dave, ISO 800 would give an extra stop of light and boost shutter. Head on views can be challenging like to see slightly different head angle and sharper face. Love the species, the colors look good and can be difficult on the male.

The pose looks nice. Love the colour of these ones.
The blur (gaussian?) has been applied to the branch and feet making the bird look stuck on. A repost with some USM applied to the bird and part of the branches, and maybe if you edited the bg in a different layer (SH, Curves, or Levles adjusted), would really make this into a nice image.
I'ld be happy to do a repost to show you what I mean if you want to send me an unedited version of this image.

Hi OZ, agree with above comments and am wondering if this was hand-held? Would explain the situation where you can't really find any sharp focus. Seems like focus was found on the body and even that is a little soft. Motion blur is usually the culprit. Sweet looking bird though! I miss these from my youth in Indiana, but not as much as I miss my youth... :D

Great comments !!! Oz these little guys are tough and frustrating !!! Did well in getting one in the open, best way to focus on them is one shot and recompose, need to get the point right on the head/eye area !!!

... what happen with the kites? Have they been working the lot for moss? Best thing about that lot for years has been the kites with moss, passes are spectacular !!!

This needs a little selective sharpening, darkening of the white spots over the head, and some darkening of the image borders would not be bad either.
