    Default Red Breasted Merganser

Bird is right next to me.....I used some tips found on this site to add canvas to the right and a tiny bit to the left. Thoughts/critiques appreciated.

Hi Pete - big warm welcome to BPN - Nice first post!!! Dont hesitate to jump right in and leave comments on other peoples images - no better way to learn yourself, all we ask is that you say what it is you like or dont like about the image.
Lots to like here - GOOD Ha and eye contact - exposure looks good, whites look a touch bright in a couple of places - could just be my screen though.
Love the hairdo and the low shooting angle - would crop some from the bottom and sharpen the eye just a tad.
    Big Congrats :)

Big Warm Welcome Agree with Lance on all points !!!

Sweet image, difficult exposure and you did well ! Excellent shadow detail, tough to have any more on the highlights !! Wish you had more room behind the bird but one fine image as presented, lot of feel ... all good !! Looking forward to the next one !!!

Welcome This is a great place to learn. Great detail and low angle. whites on neck might be clipped. Agree remove some from the bottom and littel room on the left.

Welcome and congrats on such a good first post.

Nice HA, and eye contact. Love the low angle. The hair as Lance pointed out looks great!
Your canvas extension in front of the bird looks good, but the bit added behind is noticable. You can see vertical lines above the bird in the top left, and the dark line in the bottom section is out of sync with the rest of the line where you've cropped it from. I usually try and continue lines that are there when doing this sort of stuff. Remember to go with the grain, it makes it a lot easier.

Thanks. This is a cool site. Yep I see where I could have made the left a better add canvas. Wasn't much sun at all so I should be able to get the whites where they need to be....I'll post another image one of these days.

Hi Pete, I also bid you a warm welcome. Your first post does have some nice qualities. Low angle, even lighting and good detail. Agree about the whites looking a bit bright in a few places and would crop some off the bottom.
The rear of the bird is tight in the frame but has ample room in the front...Keep posting!!

If I crop some bottom do I need to add to the top? Is it fair to say I should keep a 4.3 aspect ratio?
