    Default Pelican Sketched in Black

    Attached Images Attached Images

When I was a kid I used to take a black crayon and fill a sheet of art paper with black-then etch the image I wanted to create using a paper clip. I'm sure some of you have tried this. Anyway, my idea was to re-create that look for my twist on this weeks theme. I have done a few of them and I think it is important to pick the right image. I used the threshold adjustment and a layer mask to create this. I think it looks like a reverse sketch.

I've never done sketches, but I have sketched in crayon like you mentioned! This is very cool. Is it ok that the pelican doesn't have a neck?

Barbara, To me it is not important for this type of image to show every element. It is an artistic impression. Choosing not to reveal the neck (to me) has made this more abstract and that is something that appeals to me. If you wanted you could reveal more of the neck.:)

Ok, I just wanted to be sure the pelican was ok! :D
I'll see if I can find something that might look good as a sketch.

Hi Denise, this is a really nice example of scratch art. I'm sure you know, but you can buy paper that is pre-coated and ready for the scratching technique. I think it's a bit odd that you have color in the eye, but maybe that's what you had in mind... :)

Thanks folks, I appreciate the comments.
Kerry, Thanks. I didn't know they made pre-made paper (haven't done it since elementary school)and I didn't know there was a name for it. I just liked the effect. The pink (glad you noticed)-well I am a girl:p. I also wanted to add my own flair to the look and mask back in the original eyes to my compositions.:)

Denise, Now that's different! Way to get outside that box. I like the idea and your rendition very much! Not only did I not know it was called scratch art, I've never heard of doing this at all. Hmmmm. I have some crayons around here somewhere. I have to catch up on what I missed.

Very nice, Denise. The white on black look here is very appealing. I like the bit of color in the eye. :)

    Nice image and application, Denise.

Brings back memories of your past life?

While I agree this is OOTB and anything, well almost anything, goes. I would personally go with Barbara on the decapitization, especially since I just posted the same to Nicki. But as we always say ... Your image ... your vision. ;) :D :D

Thanks Mark, I can understand some peoples preference for the neck however I chose to leave this w/ an abstract look since it appealed to me. I appreciate your thoughts and glad you took the time to share them.:)
