I absolutely love this one. I had been struggling to get the birds a bit lower in the frame when they are bathing.... Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens with the 1.4X II TC, a 25mm extension tube, and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +1/3 stop: 1/400 sec. at f/8. Fill flash with Better Beamer -3 stops.

    Cozad Ranch, Linn, TX.

I like the first shot better, as the eyes were sharp.

Lower POV would be good Artie, but the colour certainly packs a punch!

Not sure about the 'splash' bottom lh corner, find it a little distracting. Never really like to use flash as I am always worried it would disturb the subject, how do these birds take to it?

I love the pose and the action captured. I think seeing the tail raised out of the water is awesome. The colors look great. I might evict the grass LLC

Great shot of the series, Artie.
Love the colours and the splashing water.
I was wondering if it could have been done in a way that the head would have been frozen (sharp) and the rest would have looked like it is now.

Hi Steve, Lower would be great but we were in a regular blind about 3 feet up. The next ranch has water level bliinds. Can't wait till Tuesday. I think that your splash is a blade of grass.... As for the flash, concern in most situations is much ado about nothing.... Much. Does it look as if the bird quit bathing? :) On rare occasion in low light a bird flinches once in a while but only at the first flash and then it is hard to tell that it was not the sound of the shutter as that can also make a bird flinch when the flash is off....

By far my favorite image that you have posted from Texas so far. The mixed textures between sharply defined feathers and blurred ones, plus the lovely colors, water droplets, and great BG make this potential contest winner.

    Well Done!!

If you raise the ISO to get a faster shutter speed to freeze the head then the whole bird will be sharper. Actually, I was thrilled that the head and eyes were relatively sharp. As you can see with the image here, they can move their heads pretty quickly..... :)

Hi Artie, not sure what a regular blind is:o Not sure if Rouse would either:D If you were able to have a lower POV could I assume it would be like an infinity pool, or is that not quite right?

Think I prefer the OP, more in keeping with a conservative thinking person, ME.

    Thanks

I like the colours. However, personally I will never keep a shot which has no sharp part in it. You could get quite a lot of motion blur with at least the head and eye sharp by using faster shutter speed. Not really a keeper in my book.

Hi Artie, Love this one since the whole bunting is a blur my easily confused mind can fully appreciate the impressionist look of the image and not worry about whats sharp and whats blurred:)
