    Default Grey heron (Ardea cinerea)

Herons are really shy in the south of Spain but during this time of the year they are a bit more tolerant with the presence of humans. I captured this one shooting from the car, with the engine working and the car moving a very, very low speed (unpavimented road, no traffic... it was not an unsafe situation, of course). I was driving the car when I saw the bird, then I reduced the car speed almost to stop it and when I could get a good point of view of the bird through the passenger seat I took the camera and got a two sharp images from a series of three frames. The heron was cooperative but, she was not a professional model posing for me :)
This one is a full frame image but the bird is a bit centerd in the composition so I cropped from the left and a bit from the right.
Comments and criticas are highly apreciated :)

Exposure, sharpness are spot on, Juan. Congrats from shooting from a car. Cropping wise, I like to see more room on the bottom and little more on the right. Wish the BG was all green like the middle as the top part of the dark green is a bit distracting to me.

What time of the day did you shoot this? Was it overcast?

    Juan:

    Beautiful dorsal display, comp, exposure.

I think the BG has just enough detail to connect the bird to its environment, without being distracting.

    Cheers

Lovely composition and I really like the sweep of the wings from fg to bg.
A moving car and through the passenger window, good for you.:)

Love the wing position and the near wing detail. I don't mind the line in the BG, although I wonder how it would look if it were level. Could stand some additional sharpening from the eye to the tip of the bill. Good to see you posting images again! :)

Juan - amazing! Question - I notice that your exposure was set "manually" - how in the WORLD did you accomplish this in a moving car shooting with what I presume to be a very small window of opportunity? Maybe you had taken some previous shots earlier and so you knew your exposure would be pretty spot on? Just wondering - very impressive indeed!

Thanks a lot for your coments, much apreciated :-)

Troy, the image was made in the morning and you are right, the day was overcast :)

CoolHandLu. It was easy to set the exposure because the day was overcasted (almost exactly the same kind of light in every direction) and I was shooting following a channel with water paralel to the road and I have seen the heron in the distance. With that information it was easy to adjust the focusing distance and exposure :)

Hello Juan, fine detail on the lower wing. Agree with the comments on the distracting dark line on top, and that you need more space between the wing and the frame on the bottom. Otherwise,a lovely image!
