hi all just wondered if any one was using this lens and their thoughts on it,
Scott,
Maybe you'll find this info helpful.

Scott,
The lens looks interesting and the rental program seems decent. Let us know if you try it, like to have more feedback.
thanks for that steve,
jeff i have just ordered one should be with me next thursday or friday.
will report back, but if anyone has any info in the meantime please share.
Here is another review... apparently the os performance is not as good as the canons..
http://www.juzaphoto.com/eng/article...on_100-400.htm
thanks for this, i will take it with a pinch of salt as i have a 150-500mm on my d300 and can get sharp shots at 500mm 150th hand held no problem, one thing that the review doesnt seem to mention is that the 50-500mm is alot heavier than the 100-400mm canon, which will not help the os. i find the os on my 150-500mm better than my nikon 18-200mm,
Scott, actually your reply makes me very happy since the Sigma 500 zooms are one of the lenses i think of upgrading to in the (may be distant) future. So I would be looking forward eagerly to you experiences.. :)
Maybe you could do an image quality comparison of the 150-500 and 50-500 once you get it?

donīt do the same mistake that me and others have done! Go for the 100-400 or even better the canon 300/4L IS USM! They outperform the sigma easy! I think the best buy is the Canon 400/5,6L USM! itīs the best lens for the money! It is the same money as the sigma!
/M
I'd save for a 400 5.6, but nikon doesn't make any, the only options that have swm (no motor in camera), and doesn't cost the moon are from sigma.... maybe a nikkor 80-400 AF-S update lens? We can only wait and see if one comes..
first thing first i suggest trying one, the af speed is very good faster than the 150-500mm imo, and that was faster than my nikon 18-200mm, the os is really very good, and the thing with buying a 400mm or 300mm is there not 500mm,
just some quick tests at 500mm wide open jpegs.
heres some test pics all at 500mm f6.3.

Scott,
Now that you've had it for a few more days, what do you think. I'm wrestling between the Sigma and the Canon 400/5.6 to use with my 7D. I must say that the 500 F.L. is awfully tempting.
hi ian, im very pleased with it, i find it sharp wide open at 500mm also the os is very good and the af is defo faster than the 150-500mm,
the weather has not been good ince i got it, but it can produce great images in bad light where the 150-500mm struggles, will post some pics this week.
as you can see the pic of the box above was taken at 500mm 1/60th hand hled.

Looks sharp as a tack!
Sigma can't be at 400mm and F5. It jumps to F6.3 at 220mm.
I have both lenses (100-400mm and 50-500mm OS) and Sigma is somewhat sharper at every FL.
anyone have anymore bird images with this thing? i want to see how well it replicates feather detail before jumping.
and can anyone say if it is sharper than the original bigma?
heres one more will post some more very soon, been busy and the weather still aint playing ball.

The last bird on the feeder, is it from 150-500 (OS), or 170-500 (non-OS)? How far was this little fellow? :)

the last 3 are from the new 50-500??
Wow ...
I was leaning towards buying the 400/5.6, but now this one is exerting a stronger pull ...
Hello All,
I'm new to this forum so greetings all.
For the past three weeks I've owned and been using the 50-500 OS with my 7D and 5DMKII. In addition, I've owned the Canon 100-400 for a number of years and the 400 f/5.6 for a couple of years.
My primary thing is birding in my backyard...western Minn. is where I live.
I've been very impressed with the 50-500 OS. It certainly is the most flexible long lens I have, sharp at all FL's and competitive with my Canon lenses.
I would encourage anyone looking at this zoom range to consider the 50-500 OS.
Nice to meet you all.
:)

I took about 12,000 images with my EF 400mm f/5.6L before recently moving up to the EF 500mm f/4L IS. Looking at these images and the other linked reviews, I think that the 50-500mm would be a better choice for most than the 400mm f/5.6L. The extra 25% reach and stabilization are the critical factors with very competitive IQ.
I have no regrets at all over the 500mm f/4L IS because it really is like an 800mm because I leave the EF 1.4x TC II on almost all the time. That extra speed and reach comes at a high cost in dollars, bulk and weight and the need to invest serious money in a tripod/gimbal rig. The lack of IS in the otherwise excellent 400mm f/5.6L also requires a tripod for best results, but works well with lesser equipment.
I'll start watching results on Flickr and other sites, but I see the 50-500mm as a new standard for beginning bird photographers that want to keep their initial investment reasonable and keep the bulk and number of lenses down. With the wonderful high-ISO performance of cameras, like the 7D and equivalent Nikons, this range of lens is really coming into the sweet spot.
I think this lens may be a game changer in this price range. For a long time I considered the Canon 500 f/4 L which I consider to be a wonderful lens. However, the 500 f/4 L was just too far out of my price range since this is really a hobby for me for the most part. I do generate some $$$ from this but not that much to justify the 500 f/4 cost.
I've wanted 500mm without a T.C. and the range of this lens, 50-500mm, was just too hard to resist. Owning Canon lenses exclusively now, I had a bias against this lens going in. The lens had to prove it's worth to me and I think it did that in spades.
For a while, wanting the 500mm reach, I even considered waiting for a possible replacement from Canon to the 100-400; which by the way I consider an outstanding lens as well.
However, there were no rumors of any new Canon zoom in the 50-500 range and I figured that if one did come from Canon, it would most likely be another $1,000 or so more for the Canon name than a Sigma.
Good to hear from all of you.
Here's a search of Flickr for the 50-500mm. I see lots of admirable images:

I did a search on flickr specifically for the OS version and this is what I found:

David, I'd love to see some images with the 7D/Bigma II combo!
thanks for all your input everyone, the more i use this lens the more i love it, im not a pro and this lens in the right hands can prouce wonders, alright its no 500mm f4/vr/is but for the money i paid Ģ1250 its worth the extra over the 150-500mm which i had for a year,
and those imaes on flicker are awsome, mike p is a good friend of mine and is the reason why i sold my 150-500mm on, as he had one before they ere released in the shops an tested it agaist his 2 older ones(pentax and canon mount)

These are my test shots using the 7D and 5DMKII with the Sigma. Not the best shots but I use these to compare as I learn how to use the lens.

Thanks for the comment Scott.
I really do like the lens a lot and the Flickr link shows my early efforts....I'm working to improve.
:)
