    Default Deadly Embrace

    Attached Images Attached Images

Canon 40D, Canon 70-200mmf2.8IS, iso400, shutter 1/500s at f4.0, handheld from a vehicle. No cropping done. This image was taken at Duba Plains, Okavango Delta, Botswana. The female buffalo was lagging behind the rest of the herd as they entered a thicket, and the lioness in the picture came out of the vegetation and brought the buffalo to earth in seconds. The rest of the pride arrived some moments later but by then the buffalo was already dead. I only drove in to the site once I heard the sound the buffalo made as the lion grabbed it.
    Any c and c welcome

Nice action captured. Kicked up dust adds to the image. Exposure and color looks good. I might be tempted to come in a bit tighter on this intense struggle as both animals are cut already. TFS

I would also try a bit tighter crop. Would try blurrng some the green BG bush so left side matches right side. Not that it needs to match all across, but to add attention to the animals
Do you have shot with buffalo eye visible?

Thanks for your responses, I have cropped to 6.5mpix, and reposted. Tom, I do have a shot with buffalo eye visible although not quite as sharp as this one.

Lovely action. The lack of eye contact with the buffalo doesn't bother me. The tight crop works for me. Thanks for sharing.

Like both images. Shame that you have to guide and probably miss a number of opportunities!

Very nice image. Love the action caused by the dust, but maybe an eye would have made the image even more dramatic. But I guess getting both would've been very difficult!

Quickest buffalo kill by lions I've seen took almost 15 minutes...

Grant, your repost works well. Fantastic sighting, and well captured. The sick and lame usually lag behind, and they are the ones that become prey.

Like the repost. For me, the lack of eye contact is made up by the teeth of the buffalo. Probably exposed by the lioness pulling back on the lips but it gives me the impression of gritting the teeth in pain.

Repost is better, Grant, and, like the others, would have liked to have seen at least one eye with the whites showing, but with all this action and dust flying around, that is too much to ask.

Hi guys, thanks so much for all the comment, it is much appreciated. I do have a frame with the buffalo's eye showing, but it wasnt quite so sharp as this one, and it didnt have as much dust...never know which image to choose....cheers
